Dublin born artist, painter and designer Robert Ballagh’s series of realistic portraits of writers, politicians and fellow artists – including Brian Friel. Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney and Fidel Castro – have won him lasting fame.
His painting career began in 1966 and three years later he represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale. A full-scale retrospective of his work was held at the RHA Gallery, Dublin in 2006, as well as solo shows abroad in Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria and Poland. He published his autobiography A Reluctant Memoir in 2018.
