EHOD 2024 Armagh City Walking Tour
EHOD 2024 Meeting Point Armagh County Museum

Celebrating European Heritage Open Day, this tour of Armagh highlights its roots in myths, legends, history and heritage.

This small city is located in the heart of Ulster and appointed the ecclesiastical capital of the island of Ireland. One of the best ways to discover more about the story of this city and its citizens from the pre-Christian era up to modern times, is to book a guided walking tour. This will take you through the city centre at a leisurely pace, stopping off at various locations on a route of approx. 1 km. This bijou city centre is a conservation area with many beautiful buildings and an impressive selection of Public Art. Your walking guide will entertain you with facts and anecdotes as they escort you towards the Hill of Armagh, where you will be treated to a feast for the eyes with the panoramic vistas from Ard Mhacha, height of Macha.

Please dress appropriately for all types of weather, with walking shoes. You may wish to bring a coat and small umbrella, just in case.  A moderate level of fitness is required for this walk. Individual headsets will be provided for each member of the group to ensure that everyone can hear and follow the tour. The tour starts outside the Armagh County Museum and the finishing point is the Celestial Sphere at the bottom of Abbey St.  The tour takes place on Sunday 15 September starting at 2pm and lasting 90 minutes approx.  It is suitable for those age 6 years and over.  Admission is free.

About European Heritage Open Day 2024
This year's theme for European Heritage Open Day is "routes, networks and connections – links in our heritage”.  At the heart of this theme are the notions that our heritage, in both its tangible and intangible forms, is a reminder of how peoples, communities, countries and cultures have long been inter-connected, and how we continue to be connected, through common values, shared practices and a desire to protect and make sense of our individual and collective histories. As well as the physical routes that once connected us, so much of our heritage illustrates the mobilities of the past and how people, objects, ideas and beliefs travelled far and wide.

This tour is suitable for those age 6 + years. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
