Women and the Miners’ Strike by Natalie Thomlinson

This talk looks at the histories of women from coalfield communities during the 1984-5 miners’ strike. It looks at the activism of those who got involved in groups such as Women Against Pit Closures who supported the strike, but also at the less talked-about histories of women who did not get involved in support groups but supported their families, and even those who – controversially – opposed the strike. It looks at the legacies of the strike, and asks what lessons it might have for us today.
Natalie Thomlinson is Associate Professor of Modern British History at the University of Reading, and has written extensively on feminism and gender in modern Britain. She is the co-author with Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite of Women and the Miners' Strike, 1984-5 (OUP, 2023).
