Barney Cashman is a middle-aged, mild-mannered seafood restaurateur feeling the heat of a midlife crisis. With his mother’s apartment as his unlikely hideaway, he decides it’s finally time to add a little adventure to his life. Barney sets out to arrange a series of extramarital escapades, but quickly discovers that seduction is far more complicated, chaotic, and revealing than he ever imagined.
Neil Simon’s sharp and affectionate comedy follows Barney’s encounters with three very different women. What begins as a quest for excitement becomes a wonderfully human exploration of longing, identity, and the messy business of trying to reinvent yourself.
A charming, funny, and unexpectedly touching story about desire, disappointment, and the hope for one last spark – this is Neil Simon at his most irresistibly human.
Suitable for age 12+. This production contains adult themes. As this play was written in 1969 it reflects the attitudes and language of that period.
