Starting Point: Tower Hill, Armagh – in the car park opposite Armagh Community Hospital.
End Point: Gaol Square, Armagh
This Walking Trail of approx. 80 mins which includes a visit to Armagh’s historic Gaol, is a mix of gruesome tales of days gone by, coupled with a few surprises along the way. Led by knowledgeable costumed guides, the route is steeped in local folklore and participants are transported back in time to encounter the city's ghostly inhabitants and haunted landmarks. As dusk descends you can cover your ears if you don’t want to listen to stories of the grisly, fearsome characters or mysterious happenings of the past. Tread the narrow streets lightly – you don’t know who is waiting to get you!!
A moderate level of fitness is required for this walk and there are some steep inclines. Individual headsets will be provided for each member of the group to ensure that everyone can hear and follow the tour. The route includes access into a section of the old Gaol to hear about the stories of the building and its occupants; it is said to be the most haunted gaol in Ireland.
Audio devices will be provided for the tour to ensure everyone can hear the guide from a distance.
This tour is suitable for 13+ years of age. Those aged 13-18 must be accompanied by an adult (over 18).
Parking: Car parking is available in the Tower Hill complex up to 10pm There is no car parking spaces at the end point in Gaol Square, but plenty of free parking on Mall East. Please see this link for other car parking in Armagh City https://visitarmagh.com/visitor-information/download-maps/
Distance: Less than 1 km with some steep inclines and steps.
Dress: Dress appropriately for the cold as this tour will take place partly outdoors, a raincoat, boots/walking shoes recommended.You could even come along in your Halloween costume if it’s waterproof!
Please be aware that the building contains steep steps throughout. Due to the building’s age and historic nature, Armagh Gaol is not currently fully accessible for wheelchair users or those with reduced mobility.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE NO PUBLIC TOILETS AT THE STARTING POINT OR ALONG THE ROUTE.THERE WILL BE FACILITIES IN THE GAOL OR CLOSE BY AT THE JUNCTION OF SCOTCH STEET AND DOBBIN STREET OR THE MALL SHOPPING CENTRE.
