Romance and love were far from the minds of people getting married in the late 1790s. Marriage in the Georgian era was a business transaction. A successful one was based on a solid and well considered legal agreement between the bridegroom, his family, the bride's family and their respective solicitors. Only when there was agreement between these parties was the bride asked for her opinion! Join our Georgian families as they discuss the Marriage Agreement for their children, you'll hear talk of dowrys, pin money, future heirs or better yet future sons and of course provision for the wife upon the husband's death – it was the time before marriage certificates, the time before Love & Marriage – when someone fell 'head over heels,' they really did mean just that.
