Armagh Gaol

Locked in time is the theme of these very special Gaol experiences. Built in 1780, Armagh Gaol is a well known landmark and was still operating as a gaol until as recent as 1986. During the Georgian period, typical of the prisons of the time, it held people awaiting trial, or to the stocks, held prisoners destined for transportation to colonies as well as those waiting execution. 

Conditions were notoriously filthy, chaotic, and disease-ridden. Inmates were not usually kept in separate cells and were forced to pay gaolers a fee for basic necessities such as bed, food and even their release, a fee known as a "garnish". On this historic experience, you will meet several Georgian period characters who once they transgressed the law of the time, were convicted to serve at his Majesty King George III's pleasure. 

Hear their sad tales and get an understanding of what life was like for ne'er do wells in the late 1790s.
