What's On
Saturday 29th November 2026 | 4.30pm – 5.00pm | £6
Step into the Age of Enlightenment and meet the remarkable women of the Blue Stocking Society.
Join Mrs Elizabeth Montagu, Mrs Delany and their contemporaries as they champion education, knowledge and intellectual debate for women in Georgian society. At a time when women were excluded from formal education, professions, inheritance and political life, these pioneering ladies gathered to challenge accepted ideas and inspire change.
Through literature, art, poetry and debate, the Blue Stocking movement encouraged women to pursue learning and independent thought, helping to lay the foundations for later campaigns for women's rights, from the Suffragettes to the women's liberation movement.
Discover the social restrictions faced by women in the 18th century and learn how a determined group of influential women began a movement that would change attitudes for generations to come.
"It is in the nature of mankind to hazard their peace to secure power and they know fools make the best slaves." Mrs Elizabeth Montagu
