Welcome you to Red Kite Retreat family run farm nestled in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains, the only Red Kite feeding station in Ireland where visitors can watch these majestic birds in flight.

When on a Red Kite Experience you will be in awe by the thrill and delight of these magnificent birds at close quarters. Once seen, it has the most amazing effect of attracting attention, amazement and above all, admiration. It is, quite simply, one of the most impressive and beautiful birds of prey.

The Red Kite is highly adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of habitats providing it has areas of woodland, stands of tall mature trees for nesting and roosting as well as open areas for foraging. If we look back a few hundred years, the Red Kite was a regular visitor to urban areas and villages and was given legal protection in Britain due to it keeping the streets clean.

Red Kites are gregarious and during the winter months groups of Red Kites will come together to form one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in Europe. On evenings with a good breeze, where flight is effortless, spectacular chases take place with the birds diving at each other, sometimes interlocking talons in mock fights before separating again. New arrivals are met with calls from birds already present as more birds are drawn to the roost. It really is an amazing spectacle to watch.

For a truly unique family day out, as well as being educational, we proudly provide guests an opportunity to observe the Red Kite bird in its natural habitat from hide and red kite feeding station.

Currently feeding the red kites daily at 15:00 (arrival advised 14:30).

Also available is a Photographer – Red Kite Experience please note this is restricted to a total of 5 guests within the hide, allowing you to get close and capture the majestic birds without disturbing them.
