Armagh Observatory & Planetarium

The Armagh Observatory and Planetarium is Northern Ireland’s leading astronomical research and education facility. It offers visitors a unique experience which makes it “the place for space”.

In the Planetarium’s Digital Full Dome Theatre you can take a tour of the night sky, and discover how our scientific research has impacted the field of astronomy.

Explore our exhibition area and learn more about the rich heritage of both the Armagh Observatory and the Armagh Planetarium. Look Closer and get to know the depth of our scientific research with hands on activities and workshops. You can also touch Ireland’s largest meteorite! Relax and discover the wonders of space in our Sensory Space.

Take a stroll around our Astropark, which is 14 acres of attractive, landscaped grounds. Discover the scale models of the Solar System and the Universe and a wide range of flora and fauna. Of particular interest are the Observatory building, Human Orrery, two sundials, historic telescopes and telescope domes.

About Us

Look Up, Look Out, Look Beyond and Look Closer in the exhibition area at Armagh Planetarium. Discover how the Armagh Observatory came to be, and how the Observatory and Planetarium has had an impact on astronomy on a global scale. Touch the largest meteorite on display in Ireland and create your own solar systems on the Stellar Playground!

Pre-booking a Digital Theatre show is essential. After viewing an amazing show, visitors are encouraged to design, build and then launch their own rocket!

The Armagh Observatory is the oldest scientific institution in Northern Ireland and around 25 astronomers are currently researching there. It maintains the longest daily climate series in the UK and Ireland. Specialised tours of the Observatory are available. For more information please visit www.armagh.space.

Visitors are welcome to stroll through the beautifully landscaped grounds and Astropark. These contain scale models of the Solar System and the Universe and a wide range of flora and fauna. Here, you can discover the relative distances and sizes of the rocky inner planets and the gaseous outer planets. Beyond the “hypercube”, you go on a journey beyond our Galaxy, past galaxies and clusters of galaxies to the origin of our Universe nearly 14 billion years ago.

The Grounds, Astropark and Human Orrery are freely open to visitors during daylight hours every day. Tours of the Astropark are available. For more information, please visit www.armagh.space.

Tuesday – Sunday (including Summer, Holiday periods & Bank Holidays): 10:00am – 5:00pm

Please note, last admission to the Planetarium is 4:30pm

The Armagh Planetarium is closed on Mondays (except Bank Holidays)
